xTool S1 Laser Review - The Best Laser for Beginners?
Here is my formal review of the xTool S1 20W fully enclosed laser engraver and laser cutter. After about a month of use, I have put this laser through the paces as an absolutely beginner. There's plenty to like about this laser, but also a few shortcomings. Will it find a permanent spot in my shop?

    Thanks for sharing. This is wonderful information. I am considering getting the S1 but was leaning more towards the 40W because I want to cut thicker wood. I keep seeing what the lasers will do in one pass. Will they cut thicker materials in more passes? Would the 20W cut up to 3/4" if it made more passes?

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop День назад

      Thanks for watching! The 20W could do it in multiple passes, but I have found that the cut isn’t quite as precise (maybe more burning). I have recently been playing around with the 2W IR laser and after doing so I think I’d recommend the 40W + 2W kit to have the most versatility.

    Thanks for the video. I have the bench dog fence mounted on the track tubes quad mft top, and don’t have to remove it, because you can just lay the whole top aside when you need to move it out of the way. I’m working in a small garage shop so I have to tear down every day. I left the under track extension off. Couldn’t really see what it does for me. I did have to calibrate the fence location first time, because of that, but I was afraid of hitting the under rail piece with the blade otherwise. I did not buy the right side extension, but maybe I should’ve.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop 2 дня назад

      Thanks for sharing your implementation and experience. While I originally didn't think the right side extension would be that helpful, I'm so glad I got it as it's really helped keep smaller pieces stable as the blade goes through it.

  • @mfrankoo8045
    @mfrankoo8045 3 дня назад

    Question with this setup. Say you need to cross cut a 2.5” or a 3.5” piece. How is that possible when the guide rail/track is wider than the cut?? Meaning you can’t use the fence or a stop to make a repeatable cut.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop 3 дня назад

      Great question! If the piece I’m cutting is 3/4” or thicker I do this by using the Festool Clamping Elements to hold the small piece in place against the fence and I’ll put another piece of the material further down the rail so it doesn’t sag. Any other low-profile table top clamp should work, but it would need to be thinner than the material.

    • @mfrankoo8045
      @mfrankoo8045 3 дня назад

      @@MasonWoodshop got it.. thanks! So you are using the low profile clamp at opposite end of fence (other end of material) to make sure it remains in place. Putting track over the top and just making the cut.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop 3 дня назад

      @@mfrankoo8045 Yup! The low-profile clamp is under the track when cutting very small pieces. I could do most at the mitre saw, but track saw is much more fun, haha!

  • @Opinions-from-YUL
    @Opinions-from-YUL 5 дней назад

    The main purpose of the right-hand side support fence is to allow thinner strips to be cut and supported on the opposite side of the guide rail’s cut line. That’s why it comes with a flag stop.

    Hey man, I'm looking at one of these but I can't find out the height constraints on the engraving area, and if it'd work just... without the tray if needed. Nice review, good to know about the SD card!

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop 10 дней назад

      Good question! I just removed some slats and with the tray in, you could probably cut material 50-60mm in height, depending on the focus spacing needed. You could remove the tray to gain another 8-10mm and there are also risers available that can lift the whole thing up. Note that with the tray removed and/or risers in use, you'll want to make sure you wear the provided safety glasses to protect your eyes.

    Things a piece of shit. My dewalt xr didn't even last a year. It cuts power constantly, to the point that you can't get a cut through something as small as ½" emt conduit with a bi metal blade without it cutting out under minimal load without having to restart a dozen times. My deawlt circ saw is starting to do the same thing now too. It's not the battery either... they work fine in other tools. As well, it no longer will lock in the bevel detents It's never been dropped. Overpriced garbage. No more dewalt for me. I'll buy bauer, unless herculese comes out with a brushless one... at least you get a 5 year in store return on their brushless tools. Dewalt returns are an exercise in futility. Dewalt used to make reliable tools... now they are like the Kia of cordless tools.. all flash, zero reliability. Fuck dewalt.

I'd imagine the experience would be similar to what I had with my Creality Falcon2 Pro where the unit and laser itself are great, but dialing in the focus and settings takes some trial and error. Likely great for those experienced with lasers, but the xTool S1 is in a class of it's own as far as ease of use using their XCS software. Of course, this is all my opinion as a laser beginner.

    Welcome to the club. The parallel guide and rail square parallel guides are very useful in getting accurate cuts straight from the sheet. I am redoing my sheet cutting table to allow for the hinge system, fence, and to do rip cuts with the parallel guide. This way I cut once on the sheet goods and I know things are accurate. Lumber will also get cut on the table. Thanks to these items, I can move away from the mft table idea. I don’t need mft things as most of my cuts are using the hinge, track saw and the fence. The biggest advantage for the system. If someone like me who has zero experience can cut square cuts, anyone can.

      @@MasonWoodshop I use the parallel guides to get the first few cuts done accurately until the sheet is a manageable size and I can use the fence, hinge and track saw. I prefer keeping my 8’x4’ sheet as is during transportation. I usually end up with less waste. If I precut them in 1/2, I found I had more scraps.

    Hey my friend, Another job well done with the xTool S1! I would love to see a xTool software tutorial from you. I think if you had a video to show your audience and newbie’s how to use the software will greatly help those who just got their laser and those still thinking about it. Again, great job👍👏 I’ve been working on some cool projects until yesterday. I turned on the S1, opened the software, and lo and behold, no matter where I placed the laser head, the software still showed it in the upper left corner. I couldn’t figure out the issue until I realized the cable for the air assist was damaged. The damaged cable caused the laser not to communicate with the software. Once I removed the cable from the back of the unit and turned off the laser, everything returned to normal. However, I now have no air assist because of the damaged cable. I reached out to xTool, and they’re sending me a replacement cable. Luka from tech support has been amazing. There hasn’t been a moment where I felt ignored, Luka kept reaching out to make sure things has been resolved, he is always on top of my case by keeping in touch. So, if xTool’s is reading this, I would like thank you for having an awesome employee “Luka” for his passion and carefulness working with his customers. Section 29:31 may seem like a lot of money, but when you break it down, from the quality of the packaging to the hardware build, I think it is priced just right. Most folks don’t realize how many employees are involved in the development of XTool’s products. Almost like Apple, everyone has a specific responsibility, from architectural design, building and testing a prototype model, to testing the final product. Plus, there’s another department just for user experience and implementation. The xTool team is huge compared to any other laser company I know about. I once thought the price was too high until I got my hands on the XTool S1. The only other exception for excellent build quality and support is the Roly LaserMatic MK2. Even though Roly is new with just a few employees, their laser is also unmatched in build quality and support. The LaserMatic MK2 is very budget-friendly for what you get. For me, the only drawback with Roly products is LightBurn. All of their lasers only use LightBurn, and I find that to be a drawback since it is not user-friendly. I prefer XTool’s software over LightBurn any day. I can get to more projects faster without a lot of settings with XTool’s software compared to LightBurn. Don’t get me wrong, LightBurn is far more powerful than XTool’s, but it is not user-friendly. Yeah, if anyone is considering a laser and not just for basic projects, xTool is something I would highly recommend. xTool’s products are very similar to Apple’s. You may be paying a premium, but the overall quality and functionality of each product are unmatched. If I didn’t own the S1, I would agree with many potential buyers that the price is high, but now that I have the S1, my thoughts have changed.😎

      Thanks for watching and leaving another comment! That's great to hear that you were able to get your issue resolved in such communicative manner. I have yet to have the need to reach out to support, but it's nice to hear your experience with that cable. I continue to be really impressed with the build quality and end-user feel with this product. I really liked the build of the based of the Creality Falcon2 Pro, but the experience just wasn't quite the same. I do think it provides good value and is a good laser overall, but it just wasn't quite the end-user experience I needed as a true beginner. It's been interesting follow the xTool announcement and launch of their F1 Ultra fibre + diode laser. They've done a great job promoting it and the fit and finish of that laser looks absolutely amazing, albeit at a much higher cost than the S1 due to the nature of a fibre laser. I will likely have another couple of videos over the next couple of months, but I'm conscious of not going too hard in the laser space. In about a month I'll do another check-in video on how I have hopefully by then built a custom table for it, implemented a smoke extraction solution, and ventured to new materials and projects. If my comfort continues to improve with the XCS software I may do a video on that in the future. Thanks again for watching and leaving such a great comment!

    Hi very nice presentation. How is the saw dust collection?

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop Месяц назад

      Great question! I'd say that it's mediocre. I connect the saw to my Festool dust extractor with 36mm hose and while it does extract a decent amount of saw dust, I wouldn't say it's any better or worse than other compact table saws I've used.

      Great question! I can't say I've ever thought of the switch as being problematic, but I would say that I wish that the wood knobs on the fixed base were the same sort of rubber as the plunge base.

      @@MasonWoodshop Others say the same. Trouble with the MCR Bosch model that has the rubber grips is it doesn't work in the Bosch router table. And more rounded handles could have some benefits, a reason the Dewalt 618 has those. Doing a lot of dados and the like would seem to make the rubber oval handle types better. Perhaps try applying some gun grip tape at preferred points of the wood handles?

    It is good that the bench dogs rail square and hinge can be used with many different manufactures saws, you are not tied to one.

    You can use the stops in either direction. Useful if you are cutting nearly square rectangles so you can use two stops. With metric its best just to use metres and milimetres. If you have something with a 20 dimension then you know its the thickness of a board, small off cut etc (20mm) or the side of a building, very large roof truss (20m). With centmetres there is more room for confusion if you do not state the unit. When you look at your fence you have to just know that 2 is 20mm when you say what it is.

      Great point on using the stops in either direction! I’m getting closer to using mm all the time, which can sometimes be hilarious when I say 2140mm but it’s so much easier!

    Another great video! Although I am considering upgrading to the Festool track saw, I currently have the Kreg. You mention that Ultra Rail Square will work on the Kreg system which is fantastic, but do you know if the hinge system will also? It does not appear to be specifically called out in their labels so if anyone knows for sure can they please comment. Thank you! EDIT: I just saw that Kreg is listed on their website as being supported with the hinge system.

    Thanks for the overview and demo. I'm not a huge fan of the benchdog hinge because it sits above the bench. The dashboard looks great, but $$$. The newer benchdogs rail square looks nice, I had the same festool/tso square and sold it after not wanting to deal with it tipping or printing a solution. That said, I haven't felt like I needed a rail square since I got my woodpeckers 1281 (aluminum version); it's a bit quicker and easier for me to just line the track up with my mark, square it up with the 1281, and make my cuts. That's mostly just for breaking down b igger panels though. For most cuts my preferred method is just the track with stanton dog locks. I printed my own after purchasing Dave's files and they came out great. I didn't like the ujk clips at all. Thanks for the video!

      @MasonWoodshop Месяц назад

      Hey! Thanks for watching. I also found myself using my 1281 instead of using the rail square half the time as I never felt I was getting perfectly square cuts with the TSO/Festool - I'm sure it is legitimately square, but the human error of holding it in place resulted in less than square cuts. So far, the Benchdogs has solved this for me as I don't need to focus much on the square.

    Have had my benchdogs hinge for over a year and love it. I liked the fact that it didn’t rely on any t track to mount. I will say the one issue I have with my mft/hinge system is how wide the table is. It’s hard to flip the rail up so that it stays up on its own. I need to figure out a counter weight solution.

    • @MasonWoodshop
      @MasonWoodshop Месяц назад

      Happy to hear you have such a positive experience as well! My MFT is 960mm deep and I find that’s about the max I could have and still use the hinge effectively without walking around. If it was a bit wider or I was a bit shorter it would be a bit annoying to walk around the table each time.

    • @BenchdogsUK

      Great to hear you love the hinge. A bit of advice is you can tighten the hinge screws to make it tighter this will allow it to be stiffer to take the weight of your track.

    Congrats on the hinge from bench dogs. I have zero doubt you will love the hinge system. You pointed out an obvious thing about the Festool track square, in which I didn't know. I love TSO products but I never put 2 and 2 together to see that TSO track squares are indeed Festool rebranding the TSO product. With that Jason at bourbon moth let slip that Isotunes makes the Festool ear protection . I also would like to say the sky is the limit for you my friend your skills at presenting and your presentation are fun to watch. I like that you left the missed shot of your demonstrating the square of the cut, and you left it in the final edit. As a photography enthusiast, editing is where it can really become labor intensive.
